Dear friend,

As we approach the end of the year, it’s easy for achievements to be overshadowed by the tremendous challenges we have all faced. This edition of our newsletter intentionally seeks to celebrate resilience; our tenacity as fellow-South Africans; and, the importance of supporting those around us.

Underlying all is the sentiment that we need to take care of each other. We are bouncing back; we keep each other close and most importantly – we care about each other.

At the same time, I’d like to encourage you to pop in at the winery should you be planning to pass our way on your festive season travels. We’d love the opportunity to help you celebrate your own personal victories this year.

Kind regards
John Barnardt
CEO Bonnievale Wines

A golden year for Bonnievale (so far!)

Bonnievale can celebrate another sterling year thanks to the attention our wines garnered in a string of independent competitions, each with their own panels of experts. These are a credit to every member of the team, from the vineyards to the winery.

Our terroir and quality shone through at the following events this year:

  • National Wine Challenge: Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 – Double Platinum and listed as Top 100 SA Wine; and, Limited Release Chardonnay 2019 – Double Silver.
  • Gilbert Gaillard: Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 – 91 Medal; and, Limited Release Chardonnay 2019 – Gold Medal.
  • Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show: River Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2020 – Silver; River Collection Shiraz – Bronze; River Collection Merlot – Bronze; and, Limited Release Chardonnay – Bronze
  • SA Terroir– Robertson District: River Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2020; River Collection Merlot 2017; and, River Collection Pinotage 2018.

Michelangelo International Wine and Spirit Competition: Bonnievale Wines River Collection Cinsault Rosé 2020 – Gold; and, The Vale Sauvignon Blanc Brut N/A – Silver.

NEW: Try our delicious wine-and-chocolate pairings

Our tasting room manager reports that the new chocolate-and-wine pairing, launched at our Bonnievale visitor centre, is flying. The experience features five wines paired with custom-crafted chocolates.
In the line-up are:

  • The River Collection Cinsault Rosé, a crisp, dry style popularised in the south of France, which is paired with sugar-free milk chocolate.
  • The River Collection Sauvignon Blanc is paired with a chocolate truffle and serves to highlight the wine’s fresh crispness. It is characterised by tropical fruit flavours and subtle herbaceous undertones.
  • Showing citrus and peach in its aroma and flavour, the delicate River Collection Chardonnay is paired with coconut-milk chocolate.
  • The River Collection Chenin Blanc is paired with orange-dipped chocolate. The wine is crisp and bright with floral and fruity elements in its personality.
  • The River Collection Cabernet Sauvignon partners with dark chocolate in showing the wine’s intense, ripe red and black berry flavours. Soft tannins underpin perfect integration of wood and fruit.

The pairing experience is priced at R55 per person. It’s ideal for groups of friends. For more information, email tastings@bonnievalewines.co.za.

NEW: Take yours NEAT

One of our exciting recent launches included Bonnievale NEAT, a flavoursome Sauvignon Blanc that contains less than 0,5% alcohol.

The de-alcoholised wine is great for anyone watching their intake, whether at a business lunch or as designated driver. Less alcohol also equals less calories, so Bonnievale NEAT is gentle on the waistline too.

Our winemaker advises that NEAT Sauvignon Blanc 2020 is fruit-driven on the nose and tropical in style. There are notes of passion fruit, guava and gooseberries. The palate is broad, crisp and refreshing, showing those same fruit characters that linger in the finish. Enjoy with seafood, including sushi.

Bonnievale NEAT sells for R65/bottle and is available from selected retailers, but also right now via our online shop. Go to www.bonnievalewines.co.za.

A heads-up about our Bonnievale Limited Release 2018

While shopping for wine, keep our Bonnievale Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 in mind. The wine is just the second vintage of this premium range and sold exceptionally well. It is currently available for R140/bottle.

You’ll recall that Bonnievale Wines launched its limited release, single variety wines from a selection of top vineyard sites to showcase the influence of the ancient soils, climate and weather of the Bonnievale ward.

The Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon displays beautiful expressions of red fruit, notably raspberry, supported by hints of liquorice. This carries through onto the palate where it is supported by fine, ripe tannins that provide structure and depth.

Order the wine from our online shop at www.bonnievalewines.co.za.
