Take the new wine train with Bonnievale wines in one of this year’s most fun, family-friendly experiences of the Cape winelands. The steam train ride takes you on a four-hour round-trip from Robertson and includes wine tasting and an on-board deli.
Just 108 tickets are available for every trip, which is scheduled exclusively over weekends. The route takes you through the Breede River and Langeberg Valleys – a scenic countryside of mountains, rivers vineyards and villages.
Bonnievale Winery is one of just three hosts of carriages on the train and you’ll be able to taste many of its finest wines.
On arrival at the station, you’ll receive a welcome drink along with tickets and tasting coupons. Then it’s time to leave! Three coaches are dedicated for wine tasting and feature Bonnievale Winery as well as Robertson Winery and the La Verne Wine Boutique. A deli will serve light meals at fees not included in the ticket price.
The wine train is called NCCR Robertson and recalls the historic founding of this important line to connect Robertson to Mossel Bay. Before its arrival in the 19th century, farmers had to transport their wares to markets and harbours in the Cape, by wagon. The establishment of the Cape Central Railway and then the NCCR changed all this, transforming the region into the vibrant and beautiful place it is today.
Wine trains are scarce but very popular. Who knows, maybe you’ve been among the many who have googled “Wine Train South Africa” or even “Wine Train near me”!
You’ve probably heard of the Franschhoek Wine Tram and perhaps even wondered what is the best wine tram route in Cape Town? There are very few options, but the Robertson wine tram is certainly unique.
Most importantly, however: How far is Robertson from Cape Town? Well, the town is located just two hours from the Mother City. Most visitors make a weekend of it to taste wine and visit local wineries. It’s an easy drive and great for a family getaway.
Tickets are R550 for everyone aged 12 years and older. The cost for children is R300 for those between 3 and 12 years. Toddlers and babies that can be accommodated on a parent’s lap are free of charge. Tickets may be booked online.
The NCCR Robertson wine train is a wonderful opportunity to experience the railway’s days of old. This curated journey, run by a private company, also includes the chance to taste some of the area’s fantastic wines. But don’t delay, tickets for the wine train – along with Bonnievale wines – will fly!
