The pursuit of making great South African wines that people enjoy is undertaken by the collaboration of many individuals, unified by a singular vision. Among the Bonnievale team are the farmers and workers who cultivate the land; the viticulturists and winemakers who usher the fruit to its ultimate end; and, office workers who bind it all together.
“Bonnievale Winery is a formidable enterprise with a proud history,” says Christo, an experienced winemaker, industry leader and agricultural economist who joined Bonnievale Winery in July 2023. “Underscoring this success is an experienced winemaking team using best quality fruit from vineyards in diverse, cultivar matched locations. This is the essence of our ability to make exceptional wines that people enjoy.”
Christo is well known for his work as chair of the SA National Wine Show Association, organiser of the Terroir, Young Wine Show and Veritas competitions; as a board member of AgriExpo; and, as a member of the Wine and Spirit Board. He is also an accomplished wine judge, having served on local and international tasting panels.
“The biggest kick for me is to come across our wine where I don’t expect to, such as a random social setting,” says Marthinus, who joined Bonnievale Wines in December 2009. “Seeing people enjoy the wine we work hard at and are proud of is a real treat.”
Eddie joined Bonnievale Wines straight out of school and undertook various courses along the way, working his way up to the position of winemaker. “I thrive on the teamwork at the winery,” he says. “Through my journey at Bonnievale Wines, I hope to leave a legacy for young people who follow.”
Tinus was with Wandsbeck, a McGregor winery, before it amalgamated with Bonnievale Wines in 2019. A highlight of living in the valley is being able to raise children in a farm environment. “They’re around animals and nature,” he says. “It’s a wonderful privilege, especially to be part of the Bonnievale community.”
“The best time at the winery for me, like most winemakers, is harvest,” says Chris, who joined in September 2019 and heads up winemaking at the Bonnievale division. “In spite of the long hours, it’s utterly exciting to unlock the cellar doors in the morning and get those magnificent tropical aromas.”
Jean heads up the Nordale division, having joined the company in July 2017. He has a special appreciation for the effort that Bonnievale’s member farms put into their crops. “Each farm is unique, but every one delivers the volume and quality that makes us proudest among Bonnievale wineries.”
