What’s the best white wine?

Supermarket shelves are lined with white wines. Sometimes all you need is the best white wine to present with a meal or give as a gift. As we did with our suggestion of the best red wines, here’s the recommendation from Bonnievale wines. If you don’t know the brands, your safest bet is to shop by wine grape variety.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay white wines are varied beasts that may have been matured in barrels or not. That gives each category different characteristics in flavour and aroma. You’ll mostly hear tasters refer to words like popcorn, butter, lime, lemon, grapefruit, apple, pineapple and vanilla.

It’s awesome because just saying Chardonnay is sexy. You might drop into a conversation something like, “Did you know that Chardonnay is a native from Burgundy …(pause) Yes, Burgundy in France.”

Sauvignon Blanc

White wines made from this variety are commonly described as being reminiscent of fruit salad, melons, gooseberries, guavas, passion fruit, and even asparagus.

It’s the go-to grape because it says you’re sophisticated and cool, even when you’re in shorts and flip-flops. (Perfect attire for a weekend visit to the Bonnievale wine cellar, by the way).

It’s a winner because you like breaking the rules and challenging assumptions about you. An air of mystery hangs about you like a feather boa.
