Try these festive season dishes with Bonnievale Wines
You’ve got a dinner party coming and need festive season ideas of dishes that pair with Bonnievale Wines. Panic no more because we’ve got you covered.
Bonnievale Wines asked award-winning food blogger and cook Nina Timm of My-Easy-Cooking.com to create just such a list of food and wine pairings to make life easy.
Nina’s inspiration for festive season pairing
Nina was inspired by a few essential aspects of Bonnievale Wines and its location.
1. “Bonnievale Wines are delightful wines that exceeded my expectations,” she says. “They were unknown to me until now, but I’m definitely stocking up with them for the festive season.”
2. Having been raised in Ceres, Nina says her own experience informed the food and wine pairing list of country living and the sense of community on which Bonnievale Wines is founded.
3. And, thirdly, she says: “I think post-Covid, we all have come to cherish time with friends and loved ones so much more. Long table lunches and time spent around an open fire have become almost sacred. So, in terms of planning a menu, I prefer smaller bites and shared plates, paired with the delicious Bonnievale wines, of course!”
The must-try festive season food and wine list
1. Bonnievale The River Collection Cinsault Rosé 2022 paired with mosbolletjies. Bracing and dry, the wine reflects a style typical of Southern France. It’s light, aromatic and sumptuously fruity. What could be better with it than the fresh, soft, semi-sweet bun that is a mosbolletjie?
2. Bonnievale, The Vale Cinsault Brut Rosé, paired with rice crackers, cold-smoked trout and trout caviar. Seductive bubbles accompany luscious notes of strawberries and cherries in this bubbly from Bonnievale. Crisp and delicious, it’s the perfect partner for a light and tasty fish dish.
3. Bonnievale The River Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2022 paired with BBQ whole trout with red salad and chipotle mayonnaise. A tropical fruit salad distinguishes this invigorating wine, recently named an FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10. It is characterised by flintiness and herbiness. For this, bold flavours are required. Making it trout means the summer dish isn’t heavy.
4. Bonnievale The River Collection Merlot 2021 paired with Greek lamb meatball and yogurt bowls This wine is smooth and supple, redolent of red and blackberry fruit and notes of vanilla cream that echo on the palate. It’s a sit-back-relax kind of wine that will just love a dish of lamb.
5. Bonnievale The River Collection Shiraz 2021 paired with pappardelle and a ragu of beef soft shin. Spice and earthiness meet dark fruit and butterscotch with a whisper of coffee in the complex and well-structured wine. Pasta and a great sauce will make it shine!
6. Bonnievale The River Collection Chardonnay 2022 paired with jalapeño mac ‘n cheese bites. Aromas of citrus and peach unfurl from this delicate Chardonnay. In the mouth, they linger with notes of sundried fruit. The suggested dish plays on the bitter-sweet fringe, making the pairing a wholesome comfort meal.
Rules of thumb when planning a food and wine pairing
Nina advises reading the tasting notes available on the winery’s website. Then, plan the recipe accordingly.
“When I plan a recipe or meal, I always try to incorporate as many senses as possible. I love to play with different textures, temperatures and all five flavour profiles – sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Every bite should entice to want more.”
